Two weeks after Mayor Greg Nickels, a two-term incumbent, lost his bid for reelection and ended a lifetime in politics, the reasons for his failure have become conventional wisdom: He lost because of his ham-handed handling of last December’s snowstorm, his support for a $930 million tunnel to replace the viaduct, and his bullying management style. SEATTLE – Mayor Greg Nickels today announced the city of Seattle is awarding $4.3 million in federal and local funding to 10 agencies (for 13 programs) to prevent more than 1,600 low-income households from becoming homeless over the next two years. Another $1.1 million will help more than 100 homeless families move from shelters and the street into affordable housing. (read more…)

Across the country, more than one third of small businesses have been forced to reduce benefits in recent years.
Since the early 1990s, about a third of small business owners have had to drop insurance coverage for employees altogether.
It’s hard for small businesses to create jobs if they also have to bear the weight of skyrocketing premiums. (read more…)

On Election Day last week, I proclaimed that the health care workers union, Service Employees International Union (SEIU), would be the biggest winners of the night because they were poised to help knock out King County Executive candidate Rep. Ross Hunter (D-48, Medina). They helped fund a $30,000 independent expenditure ad against him. (read more…)
